JWA22 NMP Recycling Plant

JWA22 NMP Recycling Plant

The JWA22 NMP Recycling Plant is a major chemical recycling and production facility currently under construction in Kokomo, Indiana. Managed by JWA Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of the South Korean firm Jaewon Industrial, the project represents a $102 million investment aimed at supporting the North American electric vehicle (EV) and semiconductor supply chains.

Key Facility Details

The project is being developed in phases on a 30-acre site:

  • Recycling Capability: The plant is designed to recycle N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), a critical solvent used in the manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries. At full capacity, it is expected to process up to 100,000 tons of NMP annually.
  • Slurry Production: The first phase includes a 65,000-square-foot facility dedicated to dispersing conductive slurry, while a second phase will add another 150,000-square-foot facility for the same purpose.
  • Construction Status: Groundbreaking took place in June 2023, with initial operations expected to begin in 2024. Eastern Contractors Corporation is serving as the general contractor for the project.

Strategic Importance

  • Local Supply Chain: The facility will primarily serve battery manufacturers in Indiana, specifically the Stellantis and Samsung SDI gigafactory joint venture located in Kokomo.
  • Sustainability & ESG: By recycling chemical waste to "electric grade," the plant supports battery manufacturers' environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives and carbon neutrality goals.
  • Economic Impact: The project is expected to create approximately 100 high-wage jobs.
